 RETENTION OF PLACENTA

If placenta does not comes out within 6-8 hours then it called retention of placenta

Etiology-

  • In case of abortion
  • In case of dystocia
  • Calcium deficiency
  • Lake of uterine contractions
  • Any other mineral deficiency

Symptoms-

  • Placenta can be seen hanging out of vulva.
  • Reduced milk production
  • Anorexia
  • Fever 
  • Straining

Diagnosis- 

  • On the basis of signs and symptoms

Treatment-

  • First of all uterine ecbolics (cleaners) are given to the animal
  • If placenta does not comes out in 24 hrs. Placenta will removed manually (by hand)
  • Placenta should be removed after 24 hrs of parturition to lessen the chances of pyometra and uterine inflammation.
  • Don’t pull the placenta forcefully.
  • Broad spectrum antibiotics are given to the animal for at least 3 days after manual removal of placenta.
  •  Use intrauterine antibacterial medicines after removal of placenta.
  •  Good quality uterine cleaners should be given to the animal for 8-10 days.
  • Calcium magnesium Borogluconate should be given (I/V).
  • A good quality of mineral mixture should also be given to the animal to better production.
