CALF SCOURS
CALF SCOUR
It is a contagious disease of calves below the age of 1 month. It can be seen in calves, lambs and kids due to less colustrums feeding.
Etiology:
Escherichia coli is causative agent which is gram negative bacteria.
Ways of spread:
Contaminated feed and water intake.
Symptoms:
- High Fever
- Calf avoids drinking milk
- White colored diarrhea with extremely bad odour
- White colored diarrhea with extremely bad odour
- Dehydration
- White mucus membrane
- Calves may die within 48 hrs.
Diagnosis:
By signs and symptoms
Treatment:
- Give broad spectrum antibiotics along with analgesics and b-complex inj. Parentally
- Fluid therapy should be given to hydrate the calf
- Cortisone injections should be given
- Oral dose of antibiotic should also be given to get better response
- Vitamin A inj. And iron tonics should also be given along with liver tonics.
- Give enough milk to drink to the calf.
