ABORTION

Termination of pregnancy before completion of gestation period is known as abortion. In case of abortion foetus may or may not be live.

Abortion can be infectious or not-infectious.

Reasons for infectious abortion:

  • By Bacterial Infection like Brucellosis, Anthrax, Salmonellosis, Haemorrhagic Septicemia, Vibriosis etc.
  • By Viral infection like FMD, Rinderpest, Infectious Bovine Rhinotrachitis etc. 
  • By Protozoan infection like Tricomoniasis, Trypanosomiasis, Anaplasmosis etc

Non-infectious Reasons

  • Hormonal imbalance – decrease in progesterone or increase in estrogen hormone.
  • Deficiency of minerals like vitamin A and any other vitamins and minerals.
  • Trauma or injury on abdominal region of animal.
  • Elemental poisoning.
  • By the use of corticoid-steroids.

-        Environmental Stress (i.e. Extreme heat, loud speaker can also cause stress to the pregnant animal)

-        Feed consumed that contains estrogen hormone.

Signs of abortion in goat

  • Animal show parturition signs before abortion in last trimester.
  • Restlessness can be seen prior to abortion.
  • Bellowing is also a sign before abortion.
  • Retention of Placenta can occur in case of abortion.

Treatment:

  • In case of retained placenta give treatment for ROP (given in postparturient section).
  • Use intrauterine medicines for three days.
  •  Use broad spectrum antibiotics (Section drug index)
  • Use of B-complex medicines.
